French-Canadian voyageurs canoed the Grand Kankakee centuries ago. The goods that the fur traders brought to merchants (textiles and metal goods) were traded for furs with the Native Americans.
You are invited to learn more about the vital part that the fur traders played in our local history at the Lowell Public Library on Saturday, April 20 from 9 AM to 12 PM. During their visit, Voyageurs will portray the different travelers and inhabitants of the Kankakee from the 1690s through the 1780s. The reenactors dress in traditional clothing that they have handcrafted to represent the period. On display will include a canoe and other trade goods.
On May 20 and 21, the Voyageur Rendezvous, an 18th Century Fur Trade reenactment, will be held at the Grand Kankakee Marsh from 10 AM to 4 PM. The fee is $5 per person and is free to children 5 and under. Check the Lake County Parks website for more information at https://lakecountyparks.com/162/Voyageur-Rendezvous.
