Summer Reading 2026 For Kids

Summer Reading officially kicks off on Monday, June 1. This year, children will create a dragon as they read! The eight-week summer reading program is designed to encourage reading and prevent the “summer slide”.
Sign-ups begin online on Tuesday, May 26.

Join us on Monday, June 1, 10:00 AM—noon for our Summer Reading Kick-off event! Activities include balloon animals, face painting, coloring sheets, and a scavenger hunt! Stop by the program room for a free ice cream cup and a slice of pizza!

More Summer Reading Fun
Young Adult/Teens (grades 5-12)
For every book you read, you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three $50 gift cards or various other prizes. (Each dragon book counts as 2 books. Participation also gains admittance to the end-of-summer reading Cookout with Obstacle Course. Adults

On the last Saturday of each month, get a bag of books for $3. You can bring your own brown grocery bag or ask for one at the circulation desk.

Scholastic Book Fair
Monday, June 8 – Friday, June 12
The Friends of the Lowell Public Library will hold their annual summer Scholastic Book Fair June 8-12. Proceeds from the book fair are used to purchase books and prizes for library programs.

Families can choose from thousands of books, and orders will ship directly to the home, with free standard shipping on book-only purchases over $25.

Fired Up About Reading
Summer 2026
Earn a gold coin and a trip to the treasure box each day you check out five or more books! If you check out 10 books, you get a gold coin AND a slip to fill out for the end-of-summer “grand prize” drawings. The more you read, the more chances you have to win one of the prizes!
For every 10 books/chapters you log, you will earn an item to add to your dragon picture, such as a dragon face, horns, wings, flames, and gem stickers.
The following programs are for children from birth to 4th grade. There are two sessions for each summer activity – 10:30 AM and 1:30 PM. To ensure we have enough supplies, children must be pre-registered, and preschool-age children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration for these activities begins on Monday, June 1.

Saturday, July 25, is the last day you can enter books for reading credit.
Log 50 books or chapters by the last week of Summer Reading to receive a ticket for the end-of-summer Bubble Foam Party on Thursday, July 30 (rain date Friday, July 31). This event is only for Summer Readers with tickets!
Tales for Tails Therapy Dog Visits
Tuesdays in June, 4-5 PM.
Read or just visit with a certified therapy dog! This is a fun program. Children can practice their reading skills while cozying up with a loveable pup. Registration is required!
The Big Balloonosaur Adventure!
Saturday, June 13, 3 PM.
Presented by “Smarty Pants”, the Big Balloon Show delivers. The Big Balloon Show is a one-of-a-kind stage production featuring magic, all-ages comedy, interactive storytelling, and of course, Smarty’s award-winning, larger-than-life balloon props. Throughout the show, Smarty uses his humor and balloons to excite kids about reading books and exercising their imaginations. This is a free program for children from birth through the 4 grade to enjoy with a parent or adult. Pre-registration is required.
