The following article appeared in the February 8, 1934, issue of the Lowell Tribune (page 1, column 6):
F. VANDERCARR PASSES AWAY IN HOSPITAL
HAS BEEN SICK AND IN HOSPITAL FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vandercarr received the sad news Tuesday that their son, Fay, had passed away in the Walter Reid hospital at Washington, D.C. Fay had been a patient at the hospital since [a] year ago last July and for the past six months his condition had been critical.He enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 16, 1917, and after serving for some time was discharged. A short time later he re-enlisted and served for four years and was discharged. He again re-enlisted and served another four years. In all he served 10 years in the army, most of that time being stationed in Texas and the Hawaiian Islands. While in the army his health failed and he was discharged and came home, where he remained for some [time] before going to the hospital.
The deceased was 33 years of age. He was a young man who had hosts of friends here at his old home, and it was with a deep feeling of regret that they learned of his death.
Funeral services have not been arranged as it [is] not known as yet when the remains will arrive here. The service will be in charge of Lowell Post American Legion.
The following February 15, 1934, Lowell Tribune obituary appeared on page 1, column 3:
SERGEANT ALBERT FAY VANDERCARR
Was born in Lowell, June 1, 1900. He remained here until his enlistment in the U.S. army October 16, 1917, and re-enlisted for his second enlistment on January 2, 1920. He was stationed at Fort Ruger, Honolulu, Hawaii. After a serious operation for appendicitis he came to San Francisco to a large hospital there July 7, 1930. After recuperating there he came to Lowell February 28, 1931. On June 7, 1932, he went to Springfield, Ill., where on July 22, 1932, he was taken seriously ill and was sent to the Walter Reid general hospital at Washington, D.C. He passed away after many major operations which failed to help him, at the age of 33 years, 8 months and 5 days.He leaves to mourn his departure his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vandercarr, four sisters and one brother, who are -- Lulu, Mrs. Fay Tilton and George, of Lowell; Madge, Mrs. Amos Hall, of Crown Point; Helen, Mrs. Robert Wietbrock, of Leroy; Jeanette, at home; eight nieces and three nephews.
The remains arrived in Lowell last Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at the Weaver funeral home Sunday, 2 p.m. Rev. R.H. Crowder, chaplain of Lowell American Legion Post 101, preached the funeral sermon. Mrs. Fred Minninger and Mrs. Edward Minninger sang. Members of Lowell Post American Legion, of which he was a member, gave the Legion service at the grave. Interment in the family lot in Lowell cemetery.
