Alex. M. Boyd Takes His Life
PROMINENT RETIRED FARMER SHOOTS SELF WHILE DESPONDENT
Alex. M. Boyd, a prominent retired farmer living at Merrillville, in this county took his life last Friday night. He and his wife were at the home of his sister and when Mr. Boyd had finished eating he excused himself and went up stairs and a few minutes later they heard the report of the gun and went to the room and found that he had placed a gun under his chin and fired, blowing away part of his head. He was taken to the Methodist hospital in Gary, where he died about a half hour after reaching the hospital.Mr. Boyd had been in poor health for some time and recently physicians had told him that his heart was affected and that he might go any time and it is thought he brooded over this until in a fit of despondency he took his life.
Mr. Boyd was well known all over the county, having been trustee of his township and at the last primary he was one of the unsuccessful candidates for county commissioner. He was a man who had the friendship of all who knew him.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. church in Merrillville Sunday at 2 p.m. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and that order had charge of the services.
