FIRST CASUALTY FROM LOWELL IN EUROPEAN AREA
LT. TONY VANDERMARK REPORTED MISSING IN ACTION THIS WEEK
Lieutenant Anthony Vandermark was reported missing in action on Tuesday in a telegram received by his wife, from the War Department. No details were given in the message other than stating he was "missing in action in the Western European Area".Lieutenant Vandermark, 28, had been a resident of Lowell the past four years, coming here to take charge of the automatic telephone system when the Bell Company changed to dial phones. He enlisted in the Signal Corps in September, 1941, and was commissioned a Lieutenant in October, 1942.
He was united in marriage to Miss Arline LaMotte, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arleigh LaMotte, one year ago and his wife has spent much of the time while he was in service with him. She arrived home Jan. 17 from Boston, Mass., where he had been stationed, and had not heard from him since she left that city. Lieut. Vandermark was with his company in camp at that time, and it is supposed that they left for overseas soon after.
Edwin Snell forwarded this information:
- Lt. Vandermark's name, rank, and state is on a granite memorial dedicated to
American servicemen killed or missing in action and their bodies never
recovered. This memorial is at the American cemetery in Cambridge, England.
