Bert Sharpe (1883-1928)
WELL KNOWN MAN CALLED
The following concerning the death of Bert Sharpe, brother of Mrs. Merritt Bailey and well known here, is taken from the Roanoke department of the El Paso Journal.This community was shocked on Sunday morning when news of the untimely death of Bert Sharpe was phoned from home to home throughout the town. He was at his office in the Roanoke Farmers' Association, for whom he was manager, until noon Saturday when he complained of not feeling well and did not return in the afternoon. He did not consider his illness serious until 2 o'clock Sunday morning, when the doctor was called, after which he felt somewhat better, but about 6 o'clock the physician was again called and Mr. Sharpe gradually grew worse and at about 7 o'clock he passed away. Mrs. Sharpe was visiting a sister at Havana and was notified of her husband's illness at 6 o'clock, but did not arrive here until 9.
Mr. Sharpe had been a resident of this place for the past ten years, having moved here from Panola, and was engaged by the Roanoke Farmers' Association as manager of their business. He not only made a success of the business, but made a host of friends in Roanoke and surrounding country. He was a charter member of the Masons, Modern Woodmen and Royal Neighbors and was a member of the Christian church.
Bert Sharpe, son of John W. and Margaret Sharpe, was born at Panola, Ill., July 19, 1883, and passed away at his home in Roanoke, Sunday morning, December 9, 1928. Practically all of his early life was spent in farming. He was postmaster at Panola for four years and was for several years connected with the grain business at that place.
He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Gaines, at Bloomington, on April 4, 1912. To this union were born three sons, John, 15; Clifford, 13; and Leonard, 11.
The funeral was held from the Christian church in Roanoke Wednesday at 10 a.m. Rev. Smith, of Eureka being in charge of the service, and interment was made in Evergreen cemetery at El Paso. The burial rites were in charge of the Masonic fraternity and the service was a very beautiful one.
The deceased leaves to mourn his death, his bereaved wife, three sons, four sisters and two brothers and a host of relatives and friends.

Sharpe, Miss Eunice Render, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Pyle, Havana, Ill.; Frank and Howard Hobart, Fountain Green; John Goggan, Mr. Sands, Richard Sharron, Charles and Lee Patterson, Mrs. Frank Sharpe, Peoria; Mrs. Lily Fortney, Ed., James and Clyde Patterson, LaHarpe, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Welte, Metamora; Mr. and Mrs. N.L. Leach, Minonk, Ill.; Frank Sharpe, a brother of the deceased was unable to attend the funeral on account of illness; also, a sister, Mrs. Charles Evans, Lake Park, Iowa, was unable to attend on account of illness in her family.
