Betheul Hathaway (1815-1889)
- . . . about six months, then he came to Lake co., and settled at West Creek. He was married to a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Haden (but now a widow of Walter Clever) Dec. 31, 1856.* To this union were given three children, all of whom are living and married. He embraced Christ and united with the M.E. church when young and became a very exemplary Christian. He was the stay of the society, of which he was a member, and a warm friend to the Christian ministry. He was a grand man, loved and respected by all who knew him. He died on the 24th of June. His death was caused by a sore toe, which had been frozen, and finally resulted in gangrene. He died in peace one week after his wife, and hence this was a sad funeral, and the largest here for many years. Of him it may be said:
"Servant of God, well done;
They glorious warfare is past,
The battle is fought, the victory won,
And thou art crowned at last."
* NOTE -- Although this obituary lists the marriage date of Betheul Hathaway and the widow, Lucinda Hayden Cleaver (also note the correct spelling of her name here) as Dec. 31, 1856, a March 1981 "Pioneer History" column by Lowell Historian Richard Schmall puts it as 1855.
