Case Chapman

Case Chapman

The following March 22, 1902, Lowell Souvenir article appeared on page 6, column 3:

    Suit Called Off

The suit recently brought against Case Chapman, at Whiting by Ortillia Krebs for a breach of contract to marry, wherein she claimed damages to the extent of $5,000 came to a sudden termination in the Superior Court at Hammond last Monday by the dismissal of the civil suit against Mr. Chapman and the nolle prossing of the suit wherein he was charged with an attempt to commit a felony. It will be remembered that Mr. Chapman was arrested recently and taken to Whiting where he was placed in jail over night on a warrent sworn out by Mrs. Krebs. According to all reports it seems that he was the victim of an attempted black mailing scheme and had it not been for some right clever work on the part of his attorneys, Bruce & Bruce he might possibly have been "touched up" for a few hundred dollars, more or less, but they secured sufficient evidence to clear Mr. Chapman of any criminal act. -- Register.
