Former L.H.S. Student In Radio School
Cecil LaVerne Blake, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Andrew Blake, Cedar Lake, is now learning to become a radio operator on a fighting ship at the U.S. naval training station for radiomen at Northwestern university. He will receive 16 weeks of instruction stressing the basic operating principles of all navy radio and electrical equipment. Upon completing the course he will be eligible for promotion to a third class petty officer rating and be assigned to active duty.This Lowell Tribune article was found in the February 3, 1944, issue (page 2, column 1):
- Cecil LaVerne Blake, petty officer 3/c, of Cedar Lake, a former student at L.H.S., wrote his parents last week that he has just returned from a cruise on the Atlantic on a light destroyer. He said he enjoyed it all and was not a bit seasick. LaVerne has been in technical radio school since entering service after graduating from boot training at Farragut, Idaho, just being sent to Northwestern university, then to Philadelphia, Pa., then to Washington, D.C.
