Cedar Lake Raid

Cedar Lake Raid

The following article was found on page 1, column 4 of the July 12, 1917, Lowell Tribune:

    Raid at Cedar Lake

Sheriff Barnes and his deputies made a raid at Cedar Lake last Thursday. The sheriff swooped down on the places at the "Corners" and it was quite a surprise party to them. Wherever any slot machines were found they were confiscated. Three girls were arrested, one at Russel's and two at Moriarity's place. The owners of the places and the girls were all taken to Crown Point, and warrants were sworn out by Deputy Prosecutor Bremer and the defendants all entered pleas of guilty before Judge Bailey. Leather, Russel, Kennedy, Moriariaty, Lassen and Hetzler were charged with running gambling places and were fined $37.50 and costs, and the fine and costs to the girls arrested amounted to about $50 each.

Three of those arrested were charged with running houses of ill fame and were placed under $500 bonds. Their trials will come up later.

There has been much complaint of the Lake this year and from what we can learn it has been going the limit this season. Something will have to be done to stop it and perhaps this will be the first step towards cleaning it up. From what we learned a day or so ago it would seem that another raid would bear fruit as some of the places we are informed were still running their slot machines. Law abiding citizens are tired of lawless conditions at the lake and it is high time that something was done to stop it. Cases have been reported where women have been insulted while driving along the road to Crown Point. This sure is the limit and if it continues people would be justified in raiding the places.
