Celeste Pattee Saylor (1868-1890)

Celeste Pattee Saylor (1868-1890)
(Mrs. G. Preston Saylor)

The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
After an illness of five months with that dread disease consumption, Mrs. Celeste (Pattee) Saylor, wife of G.P. Saylor, quietly passed to her rest Thursday morning, August 21st, 1890. She was born in Kankakee county, Ill., January 31, 1868, and was at the time of her death 21 years, 7 months and 20 days old. It is sad to think that one so young and just entering upon a blissful womanhood should be called away. But the summons came and she was forced to obey; although all that medical skill and the best of care could do was done, but without avail. She was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her, for her kind and gentle ways and will be sincerely mourned by this entire community. She was married to her now bereaved husband, G.P. Saylor, Sept. 19th, 1888, to whom she was a true and loving companion. Her funeral took place in the Christian church in Lowell at 2 o'clock p.m. Friday, August 22, at which time a large concourse of people gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to one they loved. Rev. Thompson assisted by Rev. Wasson officiated at the funeral. Her remains were laid to rest in the Lowell cemetery. The bereaved friends have our heartfelt sympathy.

One by one, earth's ties are broken,
As we see our love decay,
And the hope so fondly cherished,
      Brighter but to pass away.

One by one our hopes grow brighter,
As we near the shining shore,
For we know across the river,
Wait the loved ones gone before.
