Charles Berleen

Charles Berleen

A copy of the following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Services were held in Crown Point, his birthplace and longtime home, for Charles Berleen, Wednesday afternoon. Death had come suddenly and without warning in the motel at East St. Louis, Illinois, where he and his wife had stopped Sunday for an overnight stay on a short vacation trip from their Gary home. He passed away quietly as he rested after the drive.

Born on a farm southeast of Crown Point, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Berleen, Charles remained in this community and in Merrillville until 1951, [the] year he and Mrs. Berleen moved to 5516 East 4th avenue. After 35 years at Gary Works, he left his work on a disability retirement three years ago. He was a member of the C.I.O., Gary Local 1014.

With his wife, the former Ida Pahl, also native to this area, he leaves sons Gerald and David Stewart of Gary and two daughters, Mrs. Ray Considine and Mrs. William Hopkins, also of Gary; a brother John and a sister Mrs. Charles Collins of Crown Point, and another sister, Mrs. Fred Bissleberg of Indianapolis.

Rev. L. Humphrey Walz officiated for services in the Merriam funeral home and at the graveside in Calumet Park.
