SEVEN LOCAL MEN INDUCTED LAST WEEK
Seven Crown Point young men were inducted into the armed services last Friday at Indianapolis, two going into the Marine Corps and five into the army, according to Mrs. Lee Fleming, clerk of local Selective Services headquarters.Beuford Bunnell and Marvin Hegan are in the Marine Corps; army inductees are Robert Mybeck, Charles Purcell, Vernon Schweitzer, Edward Vereb, and Louis Ziller.
The local board sent 34 for physical examination last Thursday and has a call for 34 more for examination of September 17. On the same day, 16 men are also to be inducted from the Crown Point board.
The Selective Service headquarters offices will be open each day of the week beginning the first week in September, Mrs. Fleming announces. She reminds all, however, that the office is never open on Saturdays.
This March 27, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 1:
- Pvt. Charles D. Purcell left Wednesday for Ft. Lawton, Seattle, Washington, concluding ten days enjoyed at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Purcell, and sister, Marlene.

Promoted to Corporal
Charles Purcell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Purcell, of Schneider, was recently promoted to the rank of corporal. Stationed in Korea for the past three moths, Charles is attached to the 5th regiment combat team. An alumnus of Lowell high school, class of '48, he was employed with the New York Central as telegraph operator at Schneider prior to entering the service. Charles sends to his friends the following address: Cpl. Charles D. Purcell, US55179158, Hdq. Co., 2nd Bn., 5th R.C.T. - At the 8209th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Korea, patient Col. Charles D. Purcell, Jr., whose parents live in Schneider, has his pulse checked by medical corpsman Cpl. Gordon J. Campbell, whose wife, Fay, lives at 351 N. Allis, Jonesboro, Ark. Purcell, a battalion personnel clerk in the 25th Division's 5th Infantry Regiment, arrived in Korea last May. Before entering the Army in August, 1951, he was employed by the New York Central Railroad. He graduated from Lowell high school in 1948. Campbell entered the Army in September, 1942, and has been in Korea since last April. Charles was hospitalized for medical treatment.
