SHORT TALKS GIVEN BY S/SGT. JONES, LIEUT. GOINGS AND PVTS. WILSON, POTTER
Monday night at the regular meeting of American legion Post 101, the members enjoyed the presence of four Lowell boys, Staff Sergt. Mell Jones, Jr., Lieut. Dale Goings, Pvt. Ernest Wilson and Pvt. Robert Potter, all of whom were home on furlough from various branches of the service. Memories of World War I were brought back to Legion members as the four boys told of their experiences in the present conflict.Staff Sergt. Mell Jones, Jr., who just recently returned from England where he served as flight leader of his bombing crew, related some interesting phases of his trips over the continent, which he described as a thrilling experience.
"I was always lucky enough to get back home," he said, "but not all of my buddies were so fortunate. If people only knew what was going on over there," he concluded, "they would put their shoulder to the wheel a little harder. There's a war to be won, and it takes more than just the men in service to do the job-the people at home have an equal responsibility."
In connection with the regular meeting, the name of Pvt.Leonard Storey, of DeMotte, who has been missing in action in the North African sector since November 1st, was added to the roll as honorary member of Lowell Post 101.
On behalf of the entire membership, Commander F. W. Minninger, thanked the Post's four honored guests for appearing at the meeting and wished them a safe and speedy return from the present conflict.
Lieut. Goings Visits Wife Here
Lieut. Dale Goings was here last week from Camp Robinson, Ark. His wife, who has been staying here with her parents, the Thomas Grants, expects to return to Arkansas with him.This April 8, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- In a telegram to his wife, the former Gracia Belle Grant, Lieut. Dale Goings tells of his transfer from Camp Robinson, Ark., to a North Carolina camp.
This Lowell Tribune article was found in the February 10, 1944, issue (page 5, column 4):
- Mrs. Dale Goings, who has been with her husband, Lt. Dale Goings, stationed in South Carolina, has returned to her home here. Lt. Goings has been transferred to Tennessee.
This April 20, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 3, column 3:
- Lt. Dale Goings was home several days last week, and on Friday, left for a camp in the east, accompanied by his wife.
