The following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    DANIEL SOLOMON, 46, FATALLY INJURED ON ROAD WORKER JOB

    Fatally injured at 3:20 Wednesday afternoon when the tractor and mower he was operating for the State Highway department in a weed cutting operation along Indiana Route 53 was struck by a truck, Daniel Solomon, 46, son of John Solomon, of Route 8, died later in Porter Memorial hospital, Valparaiso. A fractured skull and numerous other injuries caused his death, physicians said.

    According to state police report, Solomon was driving east cutting weeds along the edge of the road when the mower was struck in the rear by a truck driven by Max E. Griffith, 31, of Dugger. Reportedly driving at a high rate of speed. Griffith was held in Porter county jail pending the coroner's inquest.

    Lake County's 28th traffic accident fatality of the year was a resident of Hebron. He leaves a widow, Ruth, and three children.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at Sheets funeral home in Lowell and burial will follow in Orchard Grove.

    Freed on Bond in Hebron Man's Death

    VALPARAISO, Ind. (INS) - Bond was set at $5,000 for Max E. Griffith, 31, of Dugger, who is charged with reckless homicide in the death June 23 of Daniel Solomon, 46, of Hebron.

    Previously the truck driver had been released on bond after being fined $5 and costs on a reckless driving charge. The more serious charge was filed later by Prosecutor Clarenece Wood.

    Charge Reckless Homicide in Death of Dan Solomon

    Max E. Griffith, 31, Dugger truck driver, was charged with reckless homicide in the fatality of Daniel Solomon, 46, of Hebron, on June 23.

    The charge was filed last Tuesday in Porter Circuit Court.

    A Porter County coroner's inquest presided over by Leonard Wetmore, deputy coroner, resulted in the verdict.

    Griffith's tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of a state highway mowing machine operated by Solomon on Ind. 53, one mile west of Hebron. Solomon died at Porter Memorial hospital in Valparaiso a few hours later.

    Prosecutor Clarence Wood said that bond has been set at $5,000.

    The deceased left a wife, Ruth and three young children.
