Darwin Richard Stephan

- Darwin Stephan, a member of the U.S. Navy for the past two years, returned to his base Tuesday, November 21, after enjoying a three-week furlough at the home of his parents and brother, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Stephan and Bernard.
from The Lowell Tribune, Dec. 7, 1950, page 5, column 4:
- Since returning to his base after enjoying a furlough at home, Darwin Stephan, member of the U.S. Navy for the past two years, has been assigned to the Panama Canal area. Messages from Lowell friends will reach him if addressed to U.S.S. PC-572, c/o FPO, N.Y., N.Y.
The following October 23, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found in Section 2 on page 2, column 2.
- U.S. naval Base, Norfolk, Va. -- Serving here aboard the USS submarine chaser No. 572 is Darwin R. Stepan [sic], sonarman third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard P. Stephan of Washington St., Lowell.
The 572 carries specialized antisubmarine weapons and, by virtue of her maneuverability, is highly effective in harbor and coastal patrolling.
Commissioned in 1942 at Portland, Ore., the 572 patrolled the Alaskan water in search of enemy submarines during World War II.
