This Ocotber 11, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
    David Grant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Grant, enlisted in the Navy Monday and has started Boot training at Great Lakes. David, who graduated from L.H.S. last spring, has been a valuable employee at Grant's store for the past few years.
The following October 25, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 4:
    Friends of Dave Grant, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Grant, can now write to him at the following address: David Byrl Grant, A/R 304-73-31, Co. 842, 103 Battalion, Camp Dawns, Great Lakes, Ill. Bob Schultz, who enlisted with Dave on October 8th, is also at Great Lakes.
The following November 8, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
    David Grant and Bob Schultz, in boot training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, had as their Sunday guests, Dave's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Grant. The boys will be very happy to hear from the fellows and girls at home. The following December 6, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 4:
    Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Grant visited their son, David, at Great Lakes Sunday. Dave and Bob Schultz of Creston will complete their Boot Training on December 15th and [will] be granted 12 hour leaves. All the fellows anticipate a Christmas leave from December 20 to January 4.
A December 27, 1951, Lowell Tribune article (page 2, column 1) listed David Grant as one of many servicemen from the Lowell vicinity arriving home for the holidays.

This January 17, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 5:
    David Grant and Robert C. Schultz, airmen apprentices, USN, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Grant and Richard Schultz, of Lowell, respectively, have completed recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. The 11-week training is designed to acquaint the recruit with all phases of Navy life, including instruction in seamanship, fire-fighting, gunnery, and signaling.

    Bob left at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, via plane, for San Diego, Calif., from where he expects assignment on an aircraft carrier. Dave is awaiting transfer to Jacksonville, Fla.

The following January 24, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 5:
    A new address has been received for David Grant, navy airman, who last week was transferred from Great Lakes, Ill., to Jacksonville, Fla. Dave will be glad to hear from home friends. Address: David Byrl Grant AA304-73-31, B 421, Sec. 2, A N (P) School Class "1" C, N.A.T.T.C., Jacksonville, Fla.
This April 3, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 3:
    Having moved to a different barracks, Dave Grant sends his new address for the Tribune and his friends. Dave, who is now in Ordinance school, has 12 more weeks of study. Address: David Byrl Grant AA 304-73-31, Bk's, 490, NATTC, NAS, Jacksonville, Florida.
This April 10, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 3, column 3:
    A typographical error occurred last week in the address of David B. Grant. Dave's barracks number is 590.
The following July 3, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 5, column 6:
    David Grant arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Grant, at the supper hour Saturday evening. Having completed courses in Navy Ordnance at Jacksonville, Fla., Dave will report to Woodby Island off the coast of Washington at Seattle on July 17.
This July 17, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 2:
    David Grant left via plane from Chicago at 12:55 Tuesday night and reported today at Woodby Island off the coast near Seattle, Washington. Transferring from Jacksonville, Fla., Dave was granted a 20-day leave enroute.
This September 18, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, columns 1-2:
    In a phone call to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Grant, on Monday evening, David revealed that he had left Woodby Island and was on the west coast, from where he would ship out to sea Tuesday. Dave didn't know the name of the ship to which he would be assigned or in what area he would serve. However, he sends this new address and will welcome mail from home friends.     The Grants have also heard from Dave's L.H.S. classmate and pal, Bob Schultz, who is at sea aboard the U.S.S. Boxer, the aircraft carrier on which a plane exploded recently, killing a number of men and burning scores more. Bob's clothing was lost in the fire, but he was not injured.
