The following January 11, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 3:

    MILITARY PROBLEM STIKES LOWELL HIGH

    The military problem is striking at the boys in Lowell High. The boys are enlisting in all branches of the armed service. Richard Burgess, a would-be senior, is in the Marines.

    Duane Ashton, Art Kasparian and Herman Allie have enlisted in the Navy, but have deferments until the end of this school year.

    Alva Peffley has enlisted in the army. Mr. Adams, our science teacher, has enlisted in the Air Force. John D Strickhorn has enlisted in the Navy. These are a few of the enlistments.

    The boys have been enlisting to avoid the draft law.

    Many other boys are considering enlisting so they can choose their preferred branch of service.

    Six Boys Enlist

    Six fellows missed about town and home this week include Duane Ashton, who left Monday for Great Lakes, where he will take his boot training in the U.S. Navy.

    Robert Blair, Paul Martin, Ralph Barker, William Joyce and Russell Tuttle enlisted in the air force.

    The boys went to Indianapolis on Friday and were sent to Sampson Air Force Base at Geneva, New York, for basic training.

This October 4, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 6:

    News of Last Week's Enlistees

    Letters from the five fellows who enlisted in the air force a week ago Friday tell of their arrival at Sampson Air Force Base, Geneva, N.Y. Bob Blair writes his folks, the Lawrence Millers, that the day's time -- 4:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. -- is consumed with daily washing, ironing, bed making and afternoon classes. 9 p.m. marks bedtime. Bob's address is Pvt. Robert V. Blair, A.F. 16388234, 3664 Trng. Sqd., Flight 863, Sampson A.F.B., Geneva, N.Y.

    We also received Bill Joyce's address: Pvt. William H. Joyce Jr., A.F. 16388240, 3664 Trng. Sqd., Flt. 863, Sampson A.F.B., Geneva, N.Y.

    And that of Pvt. Ralph E. Barker, A.F. 16388235, 3664 Trg. Sqd., Flt. 863, Sampson A.F.B., Genva, N.Y.

    Paul Martin and Russell Tuttle, who conclude the group, are stationed at Sampson A.F.B. also.

    Duane Ashton, who enlisted in the navy, is stationed at Great Lakes.

This information was found in the November 8, 1951, Lowell Tribune on page 1, column 2:
    On the previous Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Ceylon Ashton visited their son, Duane, also at Great Lakes.
The following December 20, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 5:
    Duane Ashton arrived home Monday from Great Lakes Naval Training Center to spend the holiday season with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Ashton, and other relatives. Duane recently completed his recruit training.
The following December 27, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 1:

    Completes Recruit Training at Great Lakes

    Duane R. Ashton, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ashton of Lowell, Ind., has completed recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. The 11-week training period is designed to benefit the recruit through academic lectures and personal experience.
The following May 15, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 5:
    Duane Ashton flew in from Norfolk, Va., Saturday evening to enjoy a four-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Ashton, before shipping out to sea. Duane is assigned aboard the U.S.S. Flag Ship Mindora, a carrier.
