The following February 25, 1926, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 1, column 2:

    FORMER CITIZEN PASSES AWAY

    E.G. Mathis passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.L. Shortridge, at Crown Point, last Thursday at 7 p.m. The remains were brought to Lowell Saturday and taken to Monon for burial beside his wife. Mr. Mathis was formerly a citizen of Lowell, having conducted a meat market here a number of years ago. He will be remembered by many of our people. He was past 81 years of age.
