- EDGAR HILZLEY AIRMAN AT GREAT LAKES
- Edgar D. Hilzley, airman recruit, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. Hilzley of Route 2, Lowell, Ind., is undergoing recruit training at the world's largest Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.
- Recruit training is the sharp break between civilian and Naval life in which the new Navy man learns the fundamental principles of the Naval service.
- In the course of his training the recruit is taught seamanship, Navy customs, terms, basic ordinance, gunnery, signaling and navigation.
- Upon completion of his training the recruit is assigned either to units of the Fleet or to a service school for specialized training.

PATRICIA SINCLAIR IS BRIDE OF DEAN HILZLEY
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hilzley was the scene of impressive rites in which Miss Patricia Sinclair, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sinclair of East Chicago, became the bride of the Hilzley's son, Edgar Dean.Baskets of white and lavender chrysanthemums enhanced the setting for the single ring service at which Loren Holt, pastor of the Lowell Church of Christ, officiated at four o'clock on the afternoon of November 12, 1950.
Melon colored accessories made attractive contrast for the grey gabardine suit chosen by Miss Sinclair for her wedding costume. Her corsage was of white carnations. The groom's sister, Miss Dorothy Hilzley, was the maid of honor, her ensemble featuring a grey suit and dark accessories. White chrysanthemums formed her corsage.
James Sinclair, brother of the bride served as best man.
After the ceremony family members and a few close friends attended the reception held in the Hilzley home where the bride cut her lovely cake at a candle-lighted refreshment table.
Mr. Hilzley, a graduate of Lowell high school, entered Boot Training at Great Lakes on September 11th from which he was graduated November 26th and is now attending mechanical training school at Memphis, Tenn.
Miss Sinclair attended Washington high school and is employed as a telephone operator in East Chicago.
The following September 13, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 1:
- Edgar D. Hilzley, airman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. Hilzley of Route 2, Lowell, Ind., recently was graduated from the Aviation Electronics Technician-Electronicsman School, U.S. Naval Air Technical Training Center, Memphis, Tenn.
Hilzley entered the Naval service September 11, 1950, and received his recruit training at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
Before entering the Navy, Hilzley graduated from Lowell high school and was employed by the Ford Motor Co., Chicago.
This October 4, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 5:
- E. Dean Hilzley, ATAN 3035138, FAETU (Lant) SP82 N.A.S., Norfolk, Va., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hilzley, is looking forward to a leave next month when he has completed courses at the Radar technical school which he is attending. Dean received his boot training in Memphis, where he also studied radio and television.
The following November 15, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 2:
- Dean Hilzley, ATAN, and wife are parents of their first child, a son born at St. Catherine's hospital in East Chicago on November 4th. He has been named David Joseph. Dean, who is home on leave, will report back to his base at Norfolk, Va., on November 17th.
The following May 8, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 2:
- A letter from Dean Hilzley, includes a new address for his Tribune. Dean has been transferred to a new squadron and his address now is: E.D. Hilzley, AT3 3035138, U.S. 801, N.A.S., Norfolk, Virginia.
The following November 13, 1952, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 1:
- Dean Hilzley, AT3, returned to Norfolk, Va., Saturday after a brief visit at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hilzley. His wife and baby remained here to spend two weeks visiting area relatives.
