The following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Betty Burton of Lowell:
MARRIED
Married in Chicago Thursday, January 4*, 1904, William, son of our townsman W.C. Nichols, to Miss Ellen, daughter of our townspeople Mr. and [Mrs.] William Love. These young people are very highly respected by all who have the pleasure of their acquaintance. We join their many friends in extending happy congratulations and best wishes for their future happiness and prosperity.A second article was included on the same page of the scrapbook:
- Will Nichols and Ellen Love, daughter of Wm. Love, went to Chicago Thursday morning on the milk train, where they were united in marriage. They were accompanied by Ed Brownell and Gwyneth Castle. They all returned home on the evening train. The newly married couple are two of Lowell's highly esteemed young people and popular among the younger set. Their many friends wish them much happiness.
*NOTE -- The obituary of Ellen Nichols' husband, William, lists their marriage date as Jan. 7, 1904, although an article found in the Burton scrapbook lists it as Jan. 4. Looking at a perpetual calendar, it appears that Jan. 7 is probably the correct day of the marriage, as that day fell on a Thursday, the day of the week listed in the article above.
The following March 20, 1952, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 4, column 1:
MRS. WILLIAM H. NICHOLS, PROMINENT WEST CREEK RESIDENT, SUCCUMBS
Ellen C. Love Nichols, age sixty-four, wife of William H. Nichols, passed away Thursday, March 13, after a long illness.Mrs. Nichols was born in Lowell January 6, 1888, the daughter of William M. and Lovisa Surprise Love.
On January 7, 1904, she was united in marriage to William H. Nichols. They have three children, Virgil L. Nichols of Hobart, Marion I. (Mrs. Edward) Sellberg, and Eleanor I. (Mrs. Thomas) Meadows, both of Lowell.
A few years after their marriage they moved to a farm southwest of Lowell, where she spent the remaining forty-four years of her life. Mrs. Nichols took great pleasure in her home; and as long as her health permitted, enjoyed working in her garden and lawn.
While she was able, she had an active interest in social, school, church, and community affairs, but in later years was forced to live a more quiet life. Well known in this area, she will long be remembered as a cheerful friend and pleasant neighbor. Many young people will cherish the memory of her fond interest.
She leaves to mourn her passing, a deeply bereaved husband, children and mother, Mrs. Lovisa Love Jones; two brothers, R. Neil and Harold W. Love; four grandchildren, Rosemary Meadows Broe, Donald Meadows, James and Virginia Nichols. She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Dennis and Starr Irene Broe; and many other relatives as well as a wide circle of friends.
Rev. Paul A. Reisen officiated at memorial services held Sunday afternoon in the Sheets funeral home. Interment was in the Lowell cemetery.
