Wedding Bells
Mr. Anthony Texter and Miss Elsie Shirley were united in marriage Tuesday, February 19th, 1895, at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Wallace Brown, 6520 Morgan street, Englewood, Illinois, by Rev. Heines, pastor of the Christian church of Englewood. Mr. Texter is one of West Creek's most highly respected young men, and he has chosen for a life partner one who is worthy of him in every respect. May they never regret the step they have taken, is the wish of their many friends.Copies of the following unidentified newspaper articles were found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
- Mrs. Harold Bruckman was called to Chicago Sunday, due to the illness of her aunt, Mrs. Anthony Texter. Bedfast since August 23, Mrs. Texter passed away at 2:00 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28. She will be remembered here as Elsie Shirley. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., this morning in Chicago and she was brought to Lowell for services at 2 p.m. in the Eskridge Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lowell cemetery.
- Elsie Texter, born September 16, 1871, in Lowell, Indiana, passed away August 28, 1956, in her home at 8028 South Laflin Street, Chicago, at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 12 days, following a long illness.
She was one of ten children born to Stephen Shirley and Mary Allen, both early settlers of Lowell.
She was united in marriage to Anthony Texter, also of Lowell, on February 19, 1895, and they lived in Lowell for several years.
They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1945 with relatives and friends, in Chicago, which had been their home for the past several years.
She was a member of the Lowell Obadiah Taylor chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, also the Lowell chapter of Royal Neighbors of America.
She was preceded in death by her husband seven years ago and a son in 1917 at the age of 12 years; also five sisters and a brother.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley and Evelyn, both of Chicago, also three sisters, Mrs. Eva Brown of Chicago, Mrs. Vinnie Hayhurst and Mrs. Minnie Hayden of Lowell.
Memorial services were held in the Fern Cathedral Chapel, Chicago; also at the Eskridge Funeral Home, Lowell, Thursday August 30. Interment was in the family lot in Lowell cemetery. Reverend Elving N. Peterson, Pastor of the Emerald Avenue Presbyterian church of Chicago of which Mrs. Texter was a member, officiated at both services.
Pall bearers were nephews Ivan Hayhurst, Ernest Wooldridge and Milton Harris of Lowell, Arthur Fleming of Princeton, Ill., Stephen Fleming of Leland, Ill., and Howard Craft of Beloit, Wisconsin.
