Emma Elizabeth Young Charles (1910-1956)
(Mrs. Russell Charles)

A copy of the following newspaper article, hand-identified as being from the April 19, 1956, Lowell Tribune, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

Community Grieved By Sudden Death of Mrs. Russell Charles

The death Sunday of Mrs. Emma Elizabeth Charles, who with her husband Russell, has operated the Lowell Sweet Shop and news agency for the past four years, brought grief to adults and children, alike. It was a heart rendering sight, Tuesday afternoon when her host of little "penny candy" customers called in mournful respect. Knowing of their presence would make her happy for she especially loved children. Last Halloween she gave over 200 ice cream cones to the young "trick or treat" crowd.

Ill for the past week, Mrs. Charles had stayed at the home of her son "Gerry" and family enjoying the comforting love she received from her one and one-half year old grandson, Chade Wynn.

Mrs. Charles was born in Pennsylvania Nov. 13, 1910. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Young. 12 years ago the Charles family moved to Cedar Lake from Hammond. She was a member of the Methodist church.

Mrs. Charles became seriously ill Saturday and was rushed to Gary Methodist hospital where she passed away Sunday, April 15.

The Rev. E.L. Worley of Lowell officiated at memorial services conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon; interment was made in Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond. Lowell business houses were closed in respect.

Surviving with her husband Russell, are their two sons Douglas Martin, at home, Gerald Wynn and wife Barbara and little son Chade Wynn of Lake Dalecarlia; also two brothers and two sisters of Pottsville, Pa.
