Emma Mae Alford Hamann (1909-1929)

- Emma Mae Alford was born at Ancona, Illinois, July 31, 1909, and departed this life July 13, 1929, aged 19 years, 11 months and 12 days.
Emma was the daughter of Allen and Emma Alford; her mother passing away when she was born, and at the age of fourteen days Emma was brought by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weakly to Lowell, Indiana, to make their home glad and also that they might have some one to care for. All of Emma's life was spent about Lowell, her school days were here and all who learned of her going from us have been shocked.
In 1924 Emma heard the call of the Master that she might give Him her life and became a member of the M.E. church, which she most gladly did and enjoyed its fellowship till her going now.
Emma was united in marriage to Edward Hamann, September 10, 1928, and now comes the time of separation, earthly but not eternal. She was taken with an attack of appendicitis Tuesday morning and at 10 o'clock she underwent the surgeon's care at Mercy hospital, Gary, but this became fatal and she went home to meet her mother.
She leaves to mourn her going from us, a loving and devoted companion, a loving father, Allen L. Alford, of Gary, Indiana; one devoted brother, Loren Alford, of Annapolis, Maryland, a foster mother, Mrs. Mamie Wray of Crawfordsville, Indiana, and numerous relatives and friends who will miss her.

Fell on her like the dew,
And good thoughts where her footsteps pressed,
Like fairy blossoms grew.
Sweet promptings unto kindest deeds,
Were in her every look,
We read her face, as one who reads
A true and Holy book.
And half we deemed, she needed not
The changing of her sphere,
To give to Heaven a shining one,
Who walked a Christian here.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Sheets at 2 p.m. Monday and there was a large attendance of sorrowing relatives and friends to pay their last respects to a young woman they had highly esteemed. Rev. V.V. Hackley, pastor of the M.E. church, conducted the funeral service. Interment was made in the Lowell cemetery in charge of Undertakers Sheets and Son.
