George H. Cole (1852-1943)

The following article was found in the January 21, 1943, Lowell Tribune on page 5, column 4:

    AGED SHELBY RESIDENT DIED LAST FRIDAY

    George Cole, 90, passed away at his home in Shelby last Friday. He was a life-long resident of Lake county and was one of the oldest residents of the south end. He was born on a farm in southern Lake county on Oct. 2, 1852, and had been a resident of Shelby the past 50 years.

    The deceased is survived by his wife, Elizabeth: three sons, Morin, of Shelby; Fay W., of Gary, and Henry G., of Schererville: three daughters, Mrs. Kittie Hiland, Lowell; Mrs. Ila Brooker and Mrs. Iolo Tarchala, both of Gary; two step-daughters, Mrs. Ella Metz, Pinconning, Mich., and Mrs. Louise Kad of Monterey; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Six of his grandsons are serving in the U.S. armed services.

    Funeral services were held at the Shelby Christian church last Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Interment was made in the Orchard Grove cemetery in charge of Kenneth Sheets.

NOTE -- In a September 25, 1991, "Pioneer History" story, George Cole was quoted saying, "I was born Oct. 3, 1853. . . "
