George Dickey, 71, Former Shelby Resident Dies at Valparaiso
Residents of the Lowell-Shelby community were indeed sorry to learn of the passing of George W. Dickey, 71, former Shelby resident, who died in Porter Memorial hospital, Valparaiso, following a ten day illness.Mr. Dickey, who passed away on Friday, Sept, 24, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Dickey of Monon. He operated a grocery store in Shelby for approximately 35 years. After moving to Valparaiso, he was employed by Tittle Bros. meat market, which was managed by his son, Max. Mr. Dickey operated the market while his son was in the armed forces, and after Max returned from service, George went into the real estate business. At the time of his death he was employed by the National Construction Company. He was a member of the Christian church, Valparaiso, and the Masonic lodge of Lowell.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Josephine, who died at birth, and Virginia, who was drowned in the Kankakee River in 1933. Mr. Dickey was the brother of the late Guy Dickey, noted area school teacher. He is survived by his widow, Edith; sons Donald of Louisville, Ky., Max of Indiana Dunes State Park, and James of Valparaiso; a daughter, Mrs. Harold Walsh, Elkhart; sisters Ms. Pearl Berkshire, Canton, Ohio, and Mrs. Masie Boyce, North Hollywood, California; and three grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, at the LaPell Funeral Home in Valparaiso, with the Rev. A.G. Halsey officiating. Burial was made in the Orchard Grove Cemetery.
