George W. Lyon (1830-1911)
- George W. Lyon died at his home in Sherburnville at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon February 26, 1911, after an illness of nearly six years. He was born at Lebanon, Warren Co., Ohio, November 28, 1830; being 80 years, 2 months, and 26 days old. His parents were Stephen and Catherine H. Lyon. He was of a family of 10 children only one of which survive him, Mrs. Ella Taylor, of Connersville, Ind. At the age of 3 years his parents moved to Paris, Illinois, where his early years were spent. He came to Sherburnville, Ill., in 1856 and here he has almost continuously made his home. On June 17, 1858, he was united in marriage with Nancy E. Hayhurst daughter of Dr. William and Susanna Hayhurst. To this union 8 children were born; 3 sons and 5 daughters; 5 of whom preceded him to the Better Land. The surviving children are Mrs. Sarah Bardwell and Mrs. Minnie Wilson, of Chicago, and Mrs. Emma Hayden, of Grant Park; to be a comfort to their widowed mother in her declining years. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren and numerous relatives.
Mr. Lyon was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a faithful and devoted Christian. He was very cheerful and patient through all his suffering; never murmured or complained. He was active in the things that tended toward the good and welfare of the community; taking a firm stand for what was just and right. He was kind and friendly to all and a good citizen; honest, upright, and conscientious in all his dealings among his fellowman. No one ever asked assistance in vain. In his death his family have lost a kind and loving husband and father, and those who knew him intimately, a good friend and neighbor, and the community, a good man, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
