Helen Rose Scott (1916-1934)
THAYER GIRL TAKES HER LIFE MONDAY NIGHT
HAD WORKED IN LOWELL AND WAS WELL KNOWN TO MANY PEOPLE HERE.
Miss Helen Rose Scott, 18 years old, residing with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Scott, on a farm east of Thayer, took her life in a fit of despondency Monday night at 7: 30 o'clock.The family had just sat down to supper when she left the table and went out of doors. [In] A few minutes the family heard the report of a gun and rushed outside and saw what she had done. A doctor was called at once, but nothing could be done as death was almost instantaneous. From appearances she had paced the butt end of the gun on the ground and leaned over the muzzle. One shoe was off and it is supposed she pulled the trigger with her toe. The load of shot entered her body just above the heart and passed completely through the body.
The deceased worked in Lowell at the Viant restaurant for several weeks some time ago, and during that time made many friends here who were greatly shocked to hear of her death.
Funeral services were held at the Rose Lawn church yesterday. The services were conducted by Edmon Worley. Interment was made in the Rose Lawn cemetery in charge of Sheets & Son.
This May 31, 1934, Lowell Tribune obituary appeared on page 6, column 3:
- Helen Rose Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Scott, was born April 14, 1916, and departed this life May 21, 1934, making her 18 years, 1 month and 7 days old. She was sick most all her life with nervous disposition, and this past winter she grew worse, with steady coughing spells.
She was a member of the Sunday school class and attended when she could. Any one knowing Helen, and understood the life of ill health she had to live while she was alive, knew she had a heart of love for her Creator and her friends. When she was a friend to anyone she was one of the truest of friends.
She leaves to mourn: Her parents, one brother -- Harold and one sister -- Margaret, both at home, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services, conducted by E.L. Worley, were held at Rose Lawn. Interment in the Rose Lawn cemetery, Sheets & Son in charge.
