Jack Chappell

Jack Chappell

The following August 3, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 3, column 1:

    Turn About Fair Play

Pvt. Jack Chappell, 115th Company, Camp Peary, Va., was reprimanded for whistling while on guard duty.

"Would you rather work for an hour or whistle for an hour?"

"I would rather whistle," replied Jack.

He was then taken to an officers' battalion to whistle one hour for the officers. He opened his concert with "Pistol Packin' Mama" -- the officers laughed. So Jack changed to whistle the National Anthem, which brought the officers to their feet -- and they stood at attention for one hour.

    Leave it to a Kentuckian!
