James Jackamus
MAN KILLED ON U.S. ROAD 41 SATURDAY
GAVE HIS NAME AS JAMES JACKAMUS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
A fatal accident occurred on state road 41, a quarter mile north of the north intersection of roads 2 and 41, Saturday night. Lowell and Mervin Shields, brothers, living at 835 Delaware street, Gary, were driving south on 41 and struck the man who was walking on the highway, going with his back to the traffic. When he was struck he was thrown off the road into the ditch. The two brothers immediately drove to Ed. Winberg's service station and notified the Sheriff and Deputy Coroner Petry. Both were soon at the scene of the fatal accident. When the Sheriff arrived he identified the man as one who had applied at the county jail the night before for a night's lodging. The man gave his name as James Jackamus, of Detroit, Michigan. He was released at about 6:30 that morning after eating his breakfast.
The man was very poorly dressed and appeared to be about 45 years of age. He had no papers of any kind on his person showing who he was. The only papers he had was several road maps. He had a bundle of ragged clothes and a new pair of shoes that he was carrying. He had nearly five dollars in money in his pockets.
Deputy Coroner Petry immediately notified the police department at Detroit of the accident but so far has received no word fromt hat city.
The body was brought to the undertaking rooms of Weaver & Son in Lowell and unless some word is received brom relatives or friends in Detroit he will probably be buried in Lowell cemetery.
Dr. Petry will hold an inquest later, but there is no doubt but what it was an unavoidable accident and no blame will be attached to the Gary gentleman.
