Wounded In Action
Word has been received by Mrs. James West, the former Gladys Vandercar, that her husband, Pvt. Jas. West, had been slightly wounded while fighting the Germans. Although wounded in the leg, the injury was reported not too severe and he is now recovering at a hospital.This June 14, 1945, Lowell Tribune article appeared on page 2, column 2:

Mrs. James West, the former Gladys Vandercar, received a telephone call from her husband, Pfc. James West. He said he had arrived in Charleston, S.C. from the European theatre. Now in a hospital in Charleston for continued treatment of a leg wound, Pfc. West expects to be transferred to the general hospital at Battle Creek, Mich.S/Sgt. Robert Vandercar, Mrs.West's brother, is still in France, according to the last letter to his parents, the George Vandercars. He was awaiting passage by plane to the U.S. Bob told them in the letter that he had been wounded before he was captured and imprisoned by the Germans.
