Jane Livingston Hill (1850-1934)
(Mrs. Jesse L. Hill)
- Jane (Livingston) Hill was born March 27, 1850, at Little Falls, N.Y., and passed away at the farm home of her son, James, near Lowell, Ind. Some weeks ago she fell and broke her hip. She was a great sufferer, but was beautifully ministered to by her children.
As a little girl she came with her parents to Crown Point, where she was reared and educated. She was one of the first teachers in Lake county, commencing teaching at the age of 16 years. Many boys and girls of the pioneer settlers received their first instruction from her. She is gratefully remembered by many of them today.
On November 10, 1875, she married Dr. Jesse Hill. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive their mother: Mrs. Mamie (Hill) Clifford, El Reno, Okla.; Mrs. Maude (Hill) Clark, Walters, Okla.; James Hill, of Lowell; and Luther Hill, of Harlingen, Texas. Six sisters and seven grand children also survive.
Mrs. Hill has been a member of the Lowell M.E. church for 40 years and was a teacher of the young peoples' class in the Sunday school. She had been a Sunday school [teacher] altogether for 62 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star lodge of Lowell. She was a woman very useful in all good causes and is greatly missed by the people.
The funeral service was held in the First M.E. church in Lowell last Saturday, her pastor, Rev. R.H. Crowder, preaching the service. The body was laid to rest beside her husband in Creston cemetery, in charge of Sheets & Son. A very large congregation of neighbors and friends paid their last respects to the sainted lady. The Eastern Star lodge gave their beautiful service at the altar of the church. Her soul rests in peace.
