The following February 25, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:

    Home on 10 Days Furlough

    Pvt. John Gerner, who is stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas, with the medical corps, is here on a ten-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Gerner, Sr., and his sisters and brothers. John looks as though the army wasn't treating him too badly.
This March 25, 1943, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:

    John Gerner, Jr. Receives Honorable Discharge

    John Gerner, Jr., who has been stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas, since his induction several months ago, received an honorable discharge from the army last week. John, who is past the age limit set for the army, has returned to his old job as watchman at Youngstown, in the north end of the county.
An April 6, 1944, Lowell Tribune article (page 1, column 1) entitled "World War II Vets Installed in Lowell Legion" lists John A. Gerner, Medical Corps, Ft. Riley, Kansas, as one of nine honorably discharged World War II soldiers and one WAVE who were installed at Lowell Post 101, American Legion.
