A copy of the following newspaper article, hand-dated Jan. 24, 1957, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    Fire At Cedar Lake Fatal to John F. Grzych, 58*

    John Frank Grzych, 56*, died in a fire which destroyed his cottage at Cedar Lake Monday about midnight.

    According to reports it is believed that he many have been overcome by fumes from the cottage stove. His body was not discovered until flames had been extinguished by Cedar Lake and Crown Point firemen. Deputies said cause of the fire has not been determined.

    He was taken to Eller Funeral Home and later moved to Mysliway Funeral Home in East Chicago for memorial services.

    Mr. Grzych was a former East Chicago resident and only recently occupied the cottage located behind Melody Hill Tavern on the Lowell-Cedar Lake road. The tavern in owned by his nephew, Ted Sumara.
