The following June 1, 1944, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 2:

    Appointed Glider Flight Officer

    South Plains Army Air Field, Texas, May 30 -- John Holton Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Holton Brown, Sr., route one, Lowell, has received his wings as a glider pilot and appointment as a flight officer at the "Home of the Winged Commandos" at Lubbock, Texas.

    The graduating officers have undergone one of the most intensive courses in the Army Air Forces Training Command, which is training thousands of men in the largest educational program in history.

    These "Winged Commandos" have just completed their course of training in Uncle Sam's giant cargo and troop carrying gliders at SPAAF, the school for invasion.

    Flight Officer Brown is a graduate of Lowell high school and was a student at Purdue university.

    Flight Officer John Brown enjoyed an overnight visit with his parents, the Holton Browns, recently. He is stationed in North Carolina.
