John J. "Jay" McCann (1852-1927)
J.J. McCANN PASSES AWAY
John J. McCann, commonly known as Jay, a resident of Eagle Creek township all of his long existence, excepting the first seventeen days of his life and one year spent in Crown Point, passed away at his farm home early Sunday morning at the age of 74 years and 9 months, his birthday being November 1.Although the deceased had not been enjoying good health for the past several years, his death was a distinct shock to his family members and neighbors. He fell dead from his chair which was the closing chapter in his fight against hardening of the arteries, a disease which had gradually made inroads on a once rugged constitution.
The deceased was born on November 1, 1852, and was a son of Aaron J. and Mary Ann, who settled on the McCann farm in Eagle Creek township seventeen days after the birth of the son who has just passed away. On this same farm the deceased had spent all his life, excepting one year in Crown Point. He expected to retire at this time, but found city life not to his liking and returned to his life long neighborhood to find comfort with his old friends, but few of whom remain who started to grow up with him in the early fifties.
He leaves a widow, Mary Eliza McCann, three daughters, Lillie May Henderson, of Hebron; Charlotte D. Ruf, of Crown Point, and Goldie Turner of near Lowell; also, a son, Harold McCann, of Hammond; a brother Aaron McCann, of Los Angeles, California, and two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Nichols, and Mrs. Emma Cruzon, both of Hebron.
The other members of the family who have preceded him in death are James and Crawford McCann, Diantha Hogan, Julia Hale and Ella Tillotson.
The funeral services were held from his late home in Eagle Creek township Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial was in the Hebron cemetery.
