John Leonard Tilton
- John Tilton, son of the Guy Tiltons, has enlisted in the Marines and expects to report at Paris Island, S.C., about February 1st to begin his training.
This February 8, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 4, column 1:
- Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 31 -- (Special) -- John L. Tilton, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy H. Tilton, Lowell, voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, according to an announcement by Commissioned Warrant Officer Anthony Morello, officer in charge of Marine Corps recruiting and induction in Indiana. He will receive recruit training at the Marine Corps Base, Parris Island, S.C.
This March 29, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- John Tilton, son of the Guy Tiltons, left last Thursday for service in the marine corps. John, who enlisted two months ago, will take his basic training at Parris Island, S.C.
This June 14, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Pvt. John Tilton, who has been taking his basic training in the Marines, is here visiting his parents, the Guy Tiltons.
This August 9, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- A letter from John Leonard Tilton to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Tilton, says that he has been transferred to the Marine Corps at Camp Lejuene, N.C., for eight weeks training as machine gunner. John says he likes the new location and that the food and recreation are excellent.
This October 4, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 1:
- Mrs. Eugene Black has received a letter from her brother, George Hanley, who is stationed in Hawaii, stating that he recently met John Tilton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Tilton. The unexpected meeting took place at a boxing bout, after which the boys did the town together in the way of celebration.
- Pfc. John Tilton is now stationed with the Marines at Pearl Harbor, where he expects to remain for some time. Writing his parents, the Guy Tiltons, John said he recently ran across George Hanley of Thayer, a brother of Mrs. Eugene Black and James Hanley, both of Lowell, although at present Hanley is also overseas. He said they had a fine time visiting and talking about home folks. John said the weather was plenty hot there and that when they had nothing to do they went around in bathing suits. He added that he was feeling fine and enjoying himself.
This October 18, 1945, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 6, columns 2-3:
- Letters received by the Guy Titons tell them their son, Pvt. John Tilton, who has been with the Marines at Pearl Harbor the past few months, is headed for Guam with his outfit, for occupation duty. John was enjoying good health when the letter was written.
This October 17, 1946, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 7, column 3:
- Pfc. John Tilton arrived home last Thursday from his duties with the U.S. Marines, having been stationed at Tsinghtao, China for some time. John is on terminal leave, and expects to be discharged from the service next month.
