The following unidentified newspaper article was in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
    John Nashwander was born in Switzerland 55 years ago and died in Lowell, Ind., November 26th, 1897. His disease was lung fever, he was sick about a week. His wife died several years ago in Missouri leaving to his care a little boy and girl to which he has been a faithful father. He was a man well thought of in the community being of a quiet and unassuming disposition. The funeral took place at the Catholic Church in Lowell, Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Father Schack officiating. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery northeast of town.

The following undated, unidentified newspaper article was found in a copy of Helen Craft's Scrapbook at the Lowell Public Library:
    Died: -- John Nashwander died at his home on the west side on Friday, November 26, of pneumonia. Funeral was held at the Catholic church. His wife died about six years ago. Two children are left in care of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Oser, of Crown Point. About $1,500 was left to the children.
