    JOHN UNDERWOOD DIES SUNDAY

DEPUTY PROSECUTOR SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK AFTER SHORT ILLNESS

John Underwood, chief deputy Prosecuting Attorney for Lake county, died in St. Margaret hospital in Hammond, Sunday night after a short illness. His death was caused by a heart attack brought on by a sinus infection. He was 64 years of age.

Mr. Underwood came to Gary in 1922 and immediately opened law offices and from the start enjoyed a good practice. In 1931 he was appointed chief deputy prosecutor for Lake county and held that position when he died. The appointment came as a tribute to his reputation as a good criminal lawyer and as a reward for the work he had done for the Democratic party since moving to the county.

He was noted for his knowledge in criminal law and he had had many important cases to prosecute in the time that he has been deputy. He had charge of the Kirkland case that was tried in Porter county and he did considerable work preparing for the Dillinger trial that was to have been started March 12th.
