A copy of the following newspaper article, hand-dated Oct. 6, 1955, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    JON SURPRISE, NAVY ENLISTEE, BID FAREWELL AT FAMILY GATHERING

    A family gathering Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Surprise at Lake Dale, honored their son Jon, who left today for military service. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Webster and children came from Gary, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Surprise from Merrillville. Jon's grandfather, E.A. Surprise was also a dinner guest. Jon, an alumnus of Lowell high school, class of 1954, enlisted in the navy.

A copy of the following newspaper article, hand-dated August 16, 1956, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
    Jon Surprise concluded a 30-day leave and returned to duties with the U.S. Navy. He left for Boston from Gary Wednesday morning, and will go on to Rhode Island, where he will embark upon the USS Benham DD796, for a tour of duty at sea. Jon is an electronics technician. On Sunday, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Surprise, entertained family members at a farewell dinner.
