The following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

LAVERNE P. DEWES, 35, DIES IN GARY HOSPITAL

Sympathy is extended Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Dewes and family in their bereavement. The Deweses son, Laverne Peter Dewes, 35, of 150 W. Joliet Street, Schererville, succumbed Monday in Gary Mercy hospital, where he was taken for treatment two weeks ago.

Mr. Dewes was associated with his father and brothers in the construction business.

Surviving with his parents are his wife, Leona, and four children, Sharon, Bonnie, William and Edward, all at home; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Flaherty of Hammond, Mrs. Geneve Duffin of Schererville, and Mrs. Agnes Effinger of Cook; seven brothers, Lawrence of Merrillville, Arthur of Cook; Richard in St. John; Alfred of Crown Point; Gilbert, Francis and Joseph of Lowell.

The Rev. Peter Beigle officiated at the 10 o'clock requiem Mass offered this morning, February 3, in St. Michael's church in Schererville, and burial was the church cemetery.
