The following article was found in the May 6, 1943, Lowell Tribune on page 2, column 1:

Kessler Field, Miss., April 27 -- Pvt. Lawrence Harry Coffin, son of Mrs. Ruth E. Coffin, Route 2, Lowell, this week started his recruit drill in the basic training center of Keesler Field, a unit of the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command.

Reporting from the Camp Grant reception center, Pvt. Coffin will undergo four weeks of orientation, marching, gas mask and bayonet drill, target practice and physical training. He then will be assigned to duty or sent to a technical school for special training.
