Find Skeleton Of Missing Lowell Man
ST. ELMO, ALA. -- A new bullet and another wound combined today to furnish additional leads to officers investigating the remains of LeRoy E. Miller, weathly traveler, whose skeleton was found Sunday near St. Elmo.Miller was a 36-year-old native of Lowell, Ind., and disappeared last August from his fishing camp near Bon Secour, Ala. Hunters unearthed his bullet-riddled bones Sunday and the remains were identified as those of the vanished mining, enthusiast, cattleman, resort owner and traveler.
The clues found this morning led one investigating officer to suggest that more than one person may have figured in Miller's death.
MOBILE COUNTY Sheriff W.H. Holcombe said the bones themselves briefly hid the bullets from searchers. Late Sunday one .32 and one .28 calibre bullet were found.
Sheriff's Deputy George Crawford, of Baldwin County from which Miller disappeared, said this morning that he had found another .32 as well as some additional foot bones.
Two bullet wounds in the shoulder blade were discovered yesterday and another wound was pointed out today, leading authorities to theorize that Miller was shot with two guns by two different persons.
NELSON HAMILTON, a photographer and a business associate of Miller, made tentative identification of the skeleton through bone grafts made after Miller was wounded in a Mexican adventure. The identification has now been backed up by the victim's wife, Mrs. Pearl Miller, but authorities have summoned the Mexican doctor who made the bone grafts in an effort to make the identification positive.
After Miller's disappearance last Aug. 15, a widespread search for the 36-year-old Hoosier had reached as far as Mexico, where Miller frequently went to prospect for gold.
