Lewis Hayden (1838-1907)

The following unidentified newspaper article appeared in a collection owned by Lowell Town Historian Richard Schmal:
    Lewis Hayden, son of Nehemiah and Harriet (Kitchell) Hayden, was born on the Hayden homestead in West Creek township, Lake county, Indiana, March 12, 1838, and died at his home in Lowell, October 12, 1907, at the age of 69 years and 7 months. He suffered a stroke of paralysis May 12, 1906, since which time he has been confined to the house most of the time. Everything a loving wife and dutiful children could do to effect a cure was done, but without avail. The disease affected his heart, which was the immediate cause of his death. Through his long and tedious sickness he was always patient and uncomplaining; all was well with him. He belonged to one of the most highly respected families of the pioneer settlers of this county. A man honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellow man and was greatly honored for his honesty and integrity. By industry and economy he accumulated a competency for his family. He was a kind and loving husband, an indulgent father and a good citizen and will be missed and sincerely mourned by many outside his immediate family.

    October 15, 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda Knisely. To this union four children were born. June 5, 1867, he was called upon to part with his wife in death. He was again married to Miss Almeda Knisely, December 23, 1867. To this union ten children were born. Five of his children preceded him to the Spirit World.

    His funeral occurred from West Creek church at 12 noon, Turesday, October 15th. Prayer was offered by Elder John Bruce before leaving his late home, where a large number of his neighbors and friends had gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to one they greatly respected. West Creek church was filled to overflowing, showing the esteem in which he was held in his old . . . [The article was cut off at this point.]
