Louise Bultman Balgeman (1849-1926)

- Louise Bultman was born in Hanover, Germany, July 28, 1849. At the age of 8 years she was brought to this country by her parents, who then lived on a farm near York Centre. When 19 years old she was united in marriage with Henry Balgeman. They first lived on a farm near Fullersburg for a year, then near Beecher. From there they settled down on the farm where she lived for the rest of her life -- 54 years.
She was one of the pioneers of this part of the country, with the spirit and hardihood of a pioneer. Bravely she stood by the side of her husband, helping him as much as possible in the field, transferring the place they settled on into a beautiful farm. We admire in her the qualifications of the early settlers who were instrumental in making our great state what it is today. And it with a spirit of thankfulness that we of a later age appreciate the struggles, hard work and the privations endured by these brave souls, enjoying the plea[sure] that thus came to us, and when we contemplate the achievements of the hardy and courageous men and women of whom there [are] now very few left, we feel in us the worthy ambition to follow in their footsteps and leave a heritage to our children of which they may be justly proud.
She was one of the oldest and most faithful members of the Petersburg Lutheran church. Her beautiful Christian character was an inspiration to all that came into contact with her. All those in need were ever assured of sympathy and help. Her home was ever a place of kind and thoughtful hospitality. To her children, neighbors and friends she was an example of Christian virtue and fortitude. Her husband passed away Feb. 11, 1919.
Of her ten children, four preceded the mother in to eternity. The surviving children are: Mrs. August Poltmor*, of Beecher; Ernest Balgeman, of River Forest, Ill.; Messrs. George, William, and Carl Balgeman, living on the homestead, and Mrs. Herman Herz, of Shelby.
She suffered much during her last illness but here again her patience shown forth. She passed on into that better place Saturday morning early, at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 5 days.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Petersburg Lutheran church. Rev. Horsch, the former pastor of the church, conducted the funeral services.
