A copy of the following newspaper article, hand-identified as being from the Sept. 13, 1956, Lowell Tribune, was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:

    Former Lowell Resident, Lake Teacher, Dies

    Mrs. Mabel D. Smith, 65, of 320 W. South Street, Crown Point, died Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rembrandt C. Hiller, in Evanston, Ill. She had been recovering from a long illness.

    A school teacher for many years, Mrs. Smith had lived in the county all her life. She was born and reared in Lowell, later moving to Hammond. For 10 years she taught at MacArthur school in Cedar Lake, where she lived for 30 years. Mrs. Smith moved to Crown Point three years ago.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, in the Merriam Funeral Home, 302 S. Main St., Crown Point. The Rev. Paul W. Grimes of West Ridge Community Church in Chicago will officiate. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery, Crown Point.

    Survivors include one daughter and one grandson; four sisters, Mrs. Cora Anderson of Hammond, Mrs. Russell Cook of Merrillville, Mrs. Frank Cole of Denver and Mrs. Dean Campbell of Phoenix; also one brother, Edwin Dinwiddie of Lawrenceburg, Ind.

    Her husband, Victor, died one year ago.

    Mrs. Smith was a member of the DAR, the Crown Point Woman's Club, and the First Methodist church.
