Mary E. Short McDonough (1823-1911)

- Mary E. Short was born in Clearmont county, Ohio, September 15, 1823, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Silas A. Doty, near Schneider, Ind., December 18, 1911; aged 88 years, 4 months and 3 days. On November 9, 1843 she was married to Elisha Clark McDonough. To this union four children were born, of whom two survive. In March 1865 he enlisted in the Union Army and died in this service in the same year. Mrs. McDonough was a soldier's widow for 46 years. She united with the Old School Baptist church when she was young, and in later years, she joined the Church of Christ; always living a consistent Christian life. Those who knew her best, loved her most.
She leaves to mourn her departure to that better land, her one son, Walker McDonough, of Wirt, Ind., one daughter, Mrs. Silas A. Doty, of Schneider, Ind., 7 grand-children, 8 great-grand-children and a large number of relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Silas A. Doty, December 20, 1911. Funeral Director, John Castle, had charge of the burial services. The funeral sermon was preached by Nathan Worley. The music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Sims, Miss Grace Holmes and Edmond Worley; with Mrs. John Love as organist.
After the services at the house, the funeral cortege wended its way to the Lowell cemetery where the remains were lowered to their last resting place.
The following acted as pall bearers: Elmer Doty, Ore Korney, Frank Leach, Wilbur McLean, Harry Holmes and George Holmes.
