Mary Ellen Dodge Cleaver (1882-1929)

- Word was received here last Saturday of the death of Mrs. Leonard Cleaver, at her home at Greensburg, Ind. Mrs. Cleaver was a former resident here, being a sister of Hiram Dodge, residing west of Lowell. Obituary next week.

- Again we have been face to face with the fact that "Life is uncertain and death is sure," as taps were sounded for Mrs. Leonard W. Cleaver, who passed into her final sleep July 6, 1929, at one a.m., at the Memorial hospital after an illness of nine days, where she underwent an operation hoping to regain her health.
The deceased was born at Ferry, Michigan, July 30, 1882, and was a daughter of Nebraska and Mary Ellen Dodge. She was married to Leonard W. Cleaver, August 8, 1900, at Crown Point, Ind., after which they made their home at Lowell, Ind., until 1916 when they moved to Louisiana, residing there six years, after which they moved to Greensburg, Ind.
Mrs. Cleaver was a member of the Methodist church and was an active member as long as her health permitted. No other year in the history of this old world has recorded as many heart aches. Millions of homes are sad and sorrowful but all the pains and heart aches of millions of homes do not make this one less tragic. No joy can compensate for the passing of a dear wife and mother, especially when that wife and mother were such a one as Mary Ellen Cleaver.
Mrs. Cleaver was of a domestic turn, loving her home, and faithfully caring for her family in all the details which meet a mother. She was a true and devoted wife, a fond and loving mother, always sacrificing her own needs to supply those of her friends, and never happier than when doing something to help someone else. Although her life may not be missed far out in the wide world, she will be greatly missed by her loved ones to whom she has ministered tirelessly and ceaselessly. The taking of one so loved and good touches the hearts of many for she had by her winning ways won the hearts of all whom [she] met, and the sympathy of these go out to the husband and four children who survive: Mrs. Frank (Hattie) Clark and Mrs. Omer (Ethel) Clark, both of Indianapolis, Mrs. William (Hazel) Webb, of Greensburg, and Kitchell, at home. Also, one brother Hiram Dodge, of Lowell, Indiana, and one sister, Mrs. Lillie Canning, of Cornell, Wis., and seven grand children.
Funeral services were conducted at Greensburg by Rev. E.R. Zarring with interment in South Park, The following acted as pall bearers: Albert Clark, David Clark, Ora Clark, John Glass, Thos. Robbins, Wm. Cahill.
