Mary Etta Spaulding Simms
(Mrs. George Simms)

A copy of the following unidentified newspaper article was found in a scrapbook owned by Town Historian Richard Schmal:
Mary Etta Spaulding was born in the southern part of Lake County, Ind., West Creek Township, July 24, 1843 and passed peacefully away at her home near Shelby, Ind., January 26, 1928 at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 2 days.

She was united in marriage to George Simms, April 27, 1864 and to this union were born three children -- two sons and one daughter. The father passed away about 20 years ago, and the sister has been gone for some time. They went on to prepare the coming of the mother, and she goes now to make ready [for] the sons following after her. Only the two sons survive, George C. Simms, and Edward C. Simms, both at home. Mrs. Simms was the last of nine children to be called. Her parents, Herman* Meyer Spaulding and Nancy Spaulding, some of the first settlers to this part of the country.

Mrs. Simms was converted and united with the West Creek M.E. church in April of 1867, over 60 years ago.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. V.V. Hackley. Interment was made at West Creek cemetery in charge of Sheets and Son.

* NOTE -- Mrs. Simms' father is listed here as Herman Spaulding. Actually, his first name was "Heman." The last name"Spaulding" also appears as "Spalding" in various articles.
