Mary M. DeWitt Clement (1829-1901)

- Mary M. Dewitt was born in Stuben County, New York, April 21st, 1829, and died at her home in Lowell , Indiana, at 7 a.m. February 6, 1901, at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 18 days. She had been in very poor health for many years and was taken worse only a few days before the Death Angel claimed her; her demise being a surprise to many of her friends, they not having heard that a change for the worse had taken place. In the Autumn of 1845 she came with her parents to Lake County, Indiana, where she has since continued to make her home. January 11, 1845, she was united in marriage to John W. Clement. To this union nine children were born, four of which survive their mother: Henry of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, Niles, Mrs. Emory Thomas and Miss Julia, of Lowell, Indiana. The others died in infancy. January 16, 1880, she was called upon to part in death, with the husband of her youth. In early womanhood she was converted to Christ and united with the Methodist church and ever after lived the life of a true and devoted Christian, dying in the hope of a blessed immortality. She was a woman very highly respected by all who knew her and her death will be sincerely mourned [by] many outside of her immediate family. She leaves four children; eight grand children; two brothers and one sister: Lyman of Fort Sill, Indian Territory, Orrin of Shelby, Indiana, and Mrs. John Buckley, of Lowell; together with a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her departure to that better land. Her funeral occurred from the Methodist Church Lowell at 10:30 a.m. Monday; Rev. E.D. Smith had charge of the funeral services. She was laid beside her husband in the Lowell cemetery there to rest in quiet slumber until the morning of the first resurrection. The TRIBUNE tenders sincere sympathy to the bereaved children and friends in this their dark hour of sorrow.
